We’re a few weeks into our Sugar-Free Lent Challenge, and I wanted to check in—how are you doing? Whether you’re doing this for spiritual reasons, health, or just as a personal challenge, cutting out sugar can be tough. But remember, you’re not alone in this!
Handling Sugar Cravings
Cravings are one of the biggest hurdles when eliminating sugar. They often hit hardest when we’re stressed, tired, or simply used to reaching for sweets out of habit. Here are some tried-and-true strategies to keep you on track:
Increase Your Protein Intake – Protein helps stabilize blood sugar levels and keeps you feeling full longer. My go-to for high-quality protein is Designs for Health. If you're local, we’re offering 10% off throughout Lent in-office—just ask for the promo code!
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate – Sometimes, what feels like a sugar craving is actually dehydration. Drink plenty of water, herbal teas, or sparkling water with lemon to stay refreshed.
Healthy Fat is Your Friend – Avocados, nuts, seeds, and coconut-based products help provide satiety and curb sugar cravings.
Distract Yourself – A craving lasts about 15-20 minutes on average. Take a short walk, do a quick workout, or call a friend.
Mind Your Sleep & Stress Levels – Lack of sleep and stress increase sugar cravings. Prioritize rest and stress management techniques like deep breathing, journaling, or a warm bath.
The Spiritual Shift: Replacing Cravings with Gratitude
One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned through this process is the ability to replace cravings with something more meaningful. Every time I feel the urge to reach for something sweet, I take a moment to pray and thank Jesus for what He has done for me. Then, I intentionally choose one thing to be thankful for that day—big or small.
If you’re not religious, this practice of gratitude can still be transformative. Instead of frustration over a craving, shift your mindset to appreciation. What is one thing today, even in the hardest moment, that you can be thankful for? It could be as simple as a warm cup of coffee, a kind word from a friend, or the beauty of nature around you.
This challenge is about more than just avoiding sugar—it’s about growth, discipline, and shifting our focus to something greater. Let’s continue supporting each other and embracing gratitude through this journey.
